Weekend Trip | Francois at Spier, Stellenbosch
Spier is one of South Africa’s oldest wine farms dating back to 1692.
The farm is rich in history and remains a special place to anyone who visits. Located about 40km from Cape Town, you’ll find this historic farm on the outskirts of Stellenbosch, in the heart of the Cape Winelands.
- Value for money
Francois tells us more.
We were keen to enjoy a family weekend away at Spier. Especially since Spier is ideal for us as we have two boys, aged 6 and 8. We love the large natural open spaces, great facilities and scenic surroundings.
We couldn’t believe that it’s actually so close to Cape Town! Located just outside Stellenbosch, the wine capital of South Africa and the heart of the Cape winelands, Spier really has a lovely farm feel to it. On arrival, we were greeted with warm friendly smiles from the staff which is always the best way to start a stay.
We found the staff at Spier were both very friendly and quite attentive to all our needs. They are particularly good with children and were quite up to happily entertaining the kids, while us parents took a well-deserved break.
What we got up to in the Cape Winelands.
There are so many things to do! See the list below:
- Take a Segway tour of the vineyard on your very own Segway PT – a two-wheeled, self-balancing electric vehicle.
- The wine tasting (it’s the Cape Winelands) and chocolate pairing experience, which we highly recommend
- The Eagle encounter, which was very educational and great for our kids
- Browse the local art, which is on display throughout Spier
- The spa, which offers a great range of beauty treatments and massages
The food and our highlights.
We must say the food quality at Spier is top class. They also make a conscious effort to cater to the children’s tastes as well. The Eight Restaurant prides itself on the fact that most of the ingredients in the meals served are locally produced on the Spier farm. We can also recommend much wonderful food from the wide selection of restaurants at Spier, as well as the deli and picnic baskets.
What we loved.
We loved the overall openness and space to walk and cycle. We really loved that the entire experience was also geared to our kids. Spier offers a variety of activities and facilities to keep kids occupied and our children enjoyed every bit of our stay. I loved the fact that there was a grape juice tasting for them when we adults did the wine tasting. We were also impressed by the great food on offer for the children. Spier accommodates families with children of all ages. On the morning of our check out from the Spier hotel, our youngest son immediately asked: “When can come here again?” We really feel we got value for money.
Spier is a wonderful family destination.
Spier really is for anyone. That said Spier is particularly great for families with kids and groups of travelers. We had such a great experience. Be forewarned that you must be prepared to make Spier a regular place to visit. We would definitely go at least once a year for 2 nights.
